Sony Ericsson and Metrowerks announce developer challenge
August 23 — Sony Ericsson and Metrowerks are challenging developers to create a "killer application" for the P800 Smartphone, which runs on the Symbian OS and supports PersonalJava and the Java Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP). Sony Ericcson will feature the winning application on the Smartphone and distribute it at no cost. The challenge runs through October 31, 2002.
esmertec launches micro JVM
August 23 — Jbed Micro Edition CLDC 3.0 is esmertec's version of the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) Connected Limited Device Configuration. This JVM is based on load-time compliation and features esmertec's FastBCC (Fast ByteCode Compiler) technology.
Visual Mining updates data visualization platform
August 23 — Visual Mining has released NetCharts Server 4.0. This data visualization service combines a Java charting engine with the Tomcat JavaServer Pages engine to generate interactive charts, graphs, tables, and reports.
Manning Publications tackles JSTL
August 23 — JSTL in Action introduces developers to the JavaServer Pages Standard Tag Library, recently standardized by the Java Community Process. Author Shawn Bayern demonstrates how to use JSTL to write feature-rich, dynamic Webpages.
Sun adds modules to NetBeans
August 23 — NetBeans, Sun Microsystems' open source development platform, now supports additional Java technologies. Sun added 18 new modules to the platform, including Java Data Objects (JDO), Struts support, and Java 3D support.
LogicLibrary adds J2EE Design Patterns to Logidex
August 23 — The LogicLibrary Logidex software lets developers, architects, and business analysts find, understand, and manage software development assets. Now, with integrated J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) Design Patterns, the solution features Universal Modeling Language (UML) representations of the patterns in the Sun Core J2EE Pattern Catalog, code samples mapped to the patterns, and associated documentation.
TogetherSoft acquires WebGain Studio
August 16 — TogetherSoft will assume full support of all WebGain Studio products, which include the VisualCafé Java IDE, StructureBuilder, Business Designer, and Quality Analyzer. The company will also offer WebGain customers the opportunity to migrate to TogetherSoft's application development environment.
Whizlabs releases test simulator
August 16 — The SCEA@Whiz (Sun Certified Enterprise Architect) Certification Test Simulator from Whizlabs is now available as a trial version. It features six mock tests, revision tips, performance evaluations, and technical support.
Borland adds unit-testing tool to IDE
August 16 — Parasoft will integrate Jtest, its automated unit-testing tool for Java, with Borland Software's Java IDE, JBuilder 7.0. Jtest automates testing practices such as white-box, black-box, and regression testing and performs static analysis to enforce coding standards.
Metrowerks opens new development center
August 16 — A Metrowerks Wireless Development Center has opened in Austin, Texas. These centers offer developers an opportunity to test their applications on a live wireless network and on varying devices. The Austin center includes GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) networks with connectivity to the Internet and back office servers.
Softera integrates modeling tool with JBuilder
August 16 — Borland's JBuilder 7 companion CD will now include an evaluation version of Softer's SoftModeler Enterprise Edition. This tool offers UML modeling for Java, J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition), and EJB (Enterprise JavaBean) development.
18minutes available in beta
August 16 — Written in Java, The 18minutes graphical shell allows users to invoke batch commands. A tool invoked with 18minutes opens a dialog box, substitutes the entered values, and then executes.
Websina enhances bug-tracking system
August 16 — Websina has added support for servlets and J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) containers to Bugzeo, its Web-based bug-tracking system. Version 1.4.1 supports Tomcat, JBoss, WebLogic, WebSphere, Oracle 9iAS, Orion Server, JRun, and Resin.
Manning publishes Ant development book
August 9 — Java Development with Ant by Erik Hatcher and Steve Loughran describes powerful and creative uses for Ant. The book shows readers how to compile, test, package, and deploy an application, and presents solutions to situations common in projects such as enterprise Java applications and Web services.
Advanced Systems enhances conversion tool
August 9 — Advanced Systems Concepts has released version 2.0 of its RIO (Rpg Into Objects) tool. RIO is a conversion tool for the AS/400 or iSeries that automatically converts RPG into C++ programs or Java classes. Version 2 uses IBM's Web Facing tool to create JavaServer Pages (JSPs) in place of the display files.
ObjectAssembler 2.0 now available
August 2 — ObjectAssembler is ObjectVenture's visual Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) development environment. Version 2.0 supports J2EE 1.3 and Struts, and provides real-time synchronization between an application's visual representation and its source code.
VisiComp releases RetroVue 1.1
August 2 — VisiComp has updated its RetroVue debugger tool to version 1.1. RetroVue graphically displays the state, execution, and thread interactions of Java programs so developers can trace bugs back to their root. Version 1.1 features a command-line launcher, a GUI (graphical user interface) launcher, and save/load capabilities.
Tangosol improves Coherence's clustering capabilities
August 2 — Tangosol has added distributed caching and automatic cluster restart capabilities to Coherence 1.2. The tool adds clustering to any Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) server.
