Following in the footsteps of Twilight Princess and The Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is set to receive the HD treatment in honor of its ten-year anniversary. And though its announcement trailer doesn’t allude to any brand new content, the improvements made to existing elements are very much appreciated.
For me, the graphical upgrade was the main draw toward the previous two remasters — Twilight Princess HD, especially. Similarly, seeing Skyward Sword run at an enhanced 60 frames per second is such a treat to behold. That said, the controls were always going to be the greatest hurdle the developers would face when bringing the game to the Switch. Unlike the other two titles, Skyward Sword’s motion controls are so intertwined with that game’s mechanical identity — removing that barrier seemed like a particularly tough obstacle to overcome.
Fortunately, the game features button-only controls. What a relief! Honestly, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard folks say “I really wanted to get into Skyward Sword, but the controls just weren’t very responsive.” For as much as I enjoyed the original game’s use of Wii MotionPlus — when it worked, that is — there’s no denying that many other people had a much less positive experience. With Skyward Sword HD, this wonderful game will finally be given the second chance it deserves.
I’d love to know what excites you most about the game’s reveal, though. Is it the improved frame rate? The Zelda-themed Joy-Con? The ability to play it in handheld mode specifically? Let us know in the comments below!
