January 25 -- Thought Inc. is now shipping version 4.0 of its object-relational mapping tool. CocoBase 4.0 includes support for EJB (Enterprise JavaBeans) 2.0, CMP (container-managed persistence) entity bean relationships, local and remote bean interfaces, and generic session beans.

PolarLake updates Web services platform

January 25 -- PolarLake 1.2, an enterprise XML and Web services platform for Java, features new support for the automated creation and deployment of Web services from any existing EJB (Enterprise JavaBean), Java, or COM system. Version 1.2 also includes PolarLake Designer, for constructing PolarLake applications from new or existing Java, EJB, or COM components, and the PolarLake Management Console, for deploying and managing PolarLake applications.

Sybase enhances its e-Business Platform

January 25 -- Sybase has added new components to its e-Business Platform: Business Process Integrator Suite 2.1 bundles six Sybase and New Era of Networks products that enable organizations to integrate, automate, and manage business interactions with partners and customers. PowerDesigner 9.0 is an updated version of Sybase's design tool, which allows e-business application development. Enterprise Portal 2.5 offers secure and personalized access to enterprise information.

Synergy connects development teams

O'Reilly publishes new wireless book

January 25 -- O'Reilly's "Learning Wireless Java" is a reference for programmers familiar with the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) and interested in developing wireless software applications. Author Qusay H. Mahmoud introduces the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) for developing wireless applications, and presents tips for using Sun Microsystems' KVM. He also provides the basics of MIDlet programming, and illustrates how to use the General Connection Framework for networking support, graphical APIs, and the J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) record management system for persistent storage.

January 18 -- PowerJ 4.0 is a development environment that supports application and component-level development for the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE). This latest version automates development tasks by producing nonproprietary skeletal code, and simplifies the process of building, debugging, and deploying applications.

Texas Instruments and Kada Systems partner

January 18 -- Kada Systems will integrate the Kada Mobile Platform with Texas Instruments' TCS2100 GPRS chipset. This partnership allows Texas Instruments to extend Java to all its wireless chipset products, allowing customers the ability to download and run J2ME (Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition) applications.

FatWire beefs up UpdateEngine

January 18 -- FatWire Software has released the latest version of its enterprise level dynamic content management and Web application assembly system. Based on Java, UpdateEngine6 (UE6) allows business users to manage content and provides a set of Web-based tools and wizards. Version 6 features increased ease of use and shorter development time for users and developers.

ATG Dynamo adds WebLogic support

January 18 -- ATG (Art Technology Group) has integrated the BEA WebLogic Server with the ATG Dynamo application server. This is the first step in ATG's goal of deploying its entire application suite on the leading J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) Web applications.

The Breeze Factor repackages XML Studio

January 18 -- Breeze XML Binder 3.0, formerly the Breeze XML Studio, is now available from the Breeze Factor. Breeze allows developers to create Java frameworks from XML structures and process XML documents through object interfaces. Version 3.0 features support for the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) XML Schema Recommendation, W3C XML Namespaces, and W3C DOM (Document Object Model).

Data Representations introduces micro Java development tool

January 11 -- Data Representations has launched Simplicity for Mobile Devices, a cross-platform rapid application development tool for Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition/Mobile Information Device Profile (J2ME/MIDP). The platform allows the development of programs that run on Java-enabled cell phones and other mobile devices. Simplicity for Mobile Devices features a MID Emulator that helps developers build and test MIDlets while customizing to a particular device.

Quickstream and Drala Software combine products

January 11 -- Quickstream Software will integrate its e-Content Management Platform with the Drala Workflow Engine. Quickstream's e-Content Management Platform is a Web-based application that centralizes, searches, controls, classifies, and tracks electronic business files. The Drala Workflow Engine is an embeddable Java component for automating business processes. Together, the two companies will create a J2EE workflow and e-content management tool.

JWorks develops embedded apps

January 11 -- Wind River Systems has introduced JWorks, a Java platform for embedded applications. It implements Java for 32-bit PersonalJava and Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition Connected Device Configuration classes. In addition, JWorks integrates two other embedded technologies: Insignia Solutions' Jeode JVM environment and Wind River's VxWorks real-time operating system.

JavaOne registration opens

January 4 -- This year's JavaOne will be held March 25-29 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
