When the HTC RE Camera hit store shelves in many countries this November it was an instant hit among customers. Then the device hit Canada in December which allowed many more RE Camera units to be sold. HTC is selling these little camera so quick that HTC has said that they will sell an estimated 20,000 units by the end of this year.
The RE Camera is a stylish point-and-shoot camera that was designed for users to quickly pull out of their pocket when their phone just wasn’t a good enough camera to get the right shot. Its stylish design also allows users to pull it out without being self-conscious about the device they were using in public like some people are with GoPros.
As for the specs of the RE Camera, it is a 16MO fixed-focus camera with a 1/2.3′ sensor. It is capable of shooting 120fps slo-motion video at 720p and 60fps video at 1080p . And the icing on the cake is the devices IP57 rating which means that the device is both water and dust resistant.
This is HTC’s first dive into the “action camera” market and we think that they did a decent job at it. The device does not take amazing video or pictures by any means but it does preform noticeably better than 99 percent of smartphones currently on the market which makes it worth checking out. There is one thing that might deter you from picking one up though, the price. At $200 you will be hard-pressed to get your moneys worth for the RE Camera, if it took great images and video it would be a different story.
With the HTC RE Camera slated to sell 20,000 units by the end of this year HTC looks at the device as a success. In fact, rumor has it that there is already a successor to the RE Camera in the works for release sometime next year. We are glad to see that HTC is able to broaden its horizons with this new device category and we look forward to new categories in the future.
