The following project is among 162 engineering achievements from throughout the nation and the world being recognized by ACEC as the year’s finest examples of engineering excellence. Each will be honored at the upcoming 50th Anniversary, ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards Dinner and Gala, a black-tie event on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at the Marriot Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC.
WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff of Lawrenceville, NJ, has earned a National Recognition Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) 50th annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) for its design of the new Route 72 Bridge over Manahawkin Bay in Ocean County, NJ.
Part of the only access highway to Long Beach Island, the new two-lane structure adds critical capacity to accommodate both visitors and full-time residents, especially during emergencies when its wide shoulders can be converted into travel lanes to support evacuations.
Designed to support eastbound traffic during normal conditions once the existing Bay Bridge is renovated, the new bridge is nevertheless ready for Mother Nature’s worst. Its resilient structural design can handle winds in excess of 120 mph, 500-year floods, large sheets of ice, and seismic events.
