Should There Be A Successor to PASS?

PASS was a big influence on a lot of us and did a lot of good, if never quite as much good as many of us wished. I wish PASS had survived, but it didn’t, and now we’re at a crossroads for what comes next. We’ve got short term challenges as far as supporting events that are coming up in the next few months and getting groups moved to an alternative of some sort, but beyond that, we have to decide if we want a successor to PASS or...

The 2021 Plan for SQLOrlando

SQLOrlando Annual Plan 2021 FinalDownload Over the past couple years we’ve been slowly evolving from a fairly adhoc plan of doing what we did last year to a semi structured plan that was mainly bullet points to a more structured and written out plan for 2021. Writing out a formal (ish) plan supports these goals: Explain clearly to the Board (of SQLOrlando) what we intend to do (and ultimately they can accept or amend the plan –...

Notes on the PASS 2020 Virtual Summit – Conclusions

I waited a week to write this, letting the experience settle some. Looking back, it wasn’t a terrible experience. Content was findable and as far as I could tell delivered without many issues, which is the main goal of any educational event. Networking felt like an after thought poorly executed, not at all a first class experience (perhaps a better word is opportunity, since it’s up to each attendee how much or little effort they...

Notes on the 2020 PASS Virtual Summit – Part 2

Writing most of this Monday afternoon while on lunch break. I’m attending the Advanced T-SQL Querying and Query Tuning pre-con by Itzik Ben-Gan. Quick notes on the experience: All users muted due to 100+ attendees75 minute blocks followed by a 15 minute breakI’m on the east coast, so for it’s noon...

Covid Thoughts, So Far

I’ve gathered a bunch of notes from conversations and time reflecting, thought I’d write them down to at least be able to look back at them once the storm has passed. I’m mindful about how much news I consume per day. I want to know how things are going and what has changed, but I don’t need to be immersed in it hour by hour. It has an emotional cost.I find that many people don’t understand why other people react (or don’t)...

SQLOrlando Update

We’ve cancelled our upcoming Meetups in April and May due the loss of our venue (due to corona virus worries) though we would have probably cancelled them anyway. Our lunch meetups – typically 5 to 10 attendees – remain scheduled, but we’ll evaluate those as we get closer to the dates. For the most part we plan quarter by quarter. Our next planning meeting is May 1, that’s when we’ll decide what to do for Q3. If things are...
