Japanese-based sculptor and woodworker Yoshitoshi Kanemaki chisels these ghostly life-sized figures out of camphor wood. His creations are usually born half dead already and are thematically related to the famous Latin phrase “Memento Mori.“

The sculptor’s creations are amazingly twisted. Human skeletons and a girl with many faces are some of my favorites. On the surface, Kanemaki’s art is amusing, but if we dig deeper, it brings up a precious spiritual approach to what we are and how we deal with death as a natural part of our living.
