Ahead of the 2021 riding season, the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is changing things up once again. Now, we’re looking at a new, permanent move to a May ride, instead of the event’s usual September date.
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is a charity event that runs all over the globe, raising money for men’s health initiatives. In the past, it’s raised money for things like prostate cancer research; in 2020, it teamed up with the people from Movember to raise money for men’s mental health. At the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, riders show up in snappy outfits (usually with a retro look) and tool about the city on parade. As per the website, “In keeping with the classic lines of vintage-inspired motorcycles, The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is a niche charity event that focusses on classically designed motorcycles, and dapper gentlefolk riding their bikes through the heart of their cities. These bikes strictly include Café Racer’s, Bobber’s, Classic’s, Tracker’s, Scrambler’s, Old School Chopper’s, Modern Classic’s, Sidecar’s, Classic Scooter’s, and Brat Styled motorcycles.”
Normally, this group ride runs the last Sunday in September. Of course, the 2020 event was disrupted by COVID-19, which made it tough to run any sort of group event. This year, the Ride saw motorcyclists going around solo in their fundraising.
Now, the 2021 event sees the date permanently moved, from September to May. According to the DGR’s website, the 2021 event will run on May 23. No doubt that’s a sensible choice, as it will likely make for warmer weather and better riding, and it’s something participants have been asking for. The DGR website says “The new May date will open up the riding season for many of our dapper folks in the Northern Hemisphere, and those in the Southern Hemisphere will still be able to keep relatively dry and enjoy the day. This is a significant change that has been decided on due to overwhelming feedback from our riders and volunteer hosts from around the world, based on the impact that the weather has had on the safety of our events in recent years.”
From the DGR’s website, it looks like they’re hoping the 2021 event will be a community ride once again, although they’re obviously going to follow whatever recommendations and precautions they have to.
