The city of Doral, Florida, voted to ban gambling in an apparent effort to thwart the Trump Organization from pursuing a casino.

The Doral City Council unanimously voted Wednesday on the ban. The only exception is if the city’s residents approve of it by referendum.

“We wanted to make sure we weighed in,” said Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez ahead of the vote. “We will take whatever steps necessary.”

There had been reports about the possibility that the Trump Organization could look to acquire a casino following former President Donald Trump's relocation to his Mar-a-Lago resort after leaving the White House.

“Many people consider Trump Doral to be unmatched from a gaming perspective — at 700 acres, properties just don’t exist of that size and quality in South Florida, let alone in the heart of Miami,” Trump’s son Eric Trump said in March around the time the club reopened.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a $500 million gaming agreement with the Seminole Tribe of Florida that would permit the creation of Las-Vegas–style casinos and mobile sports betting to all tribal facilities April 23.

In one part of the deal, it prohibits the tribe from objecting to the transfer of existing slot machine licenses to anywhere within 15 miles of its casino on Seminole land. The Trump Doral resort is about 18 miles away.

DeSantis rebuked accusations that the deal was made to benefit Trump, calling such claims “pure, idiotic politics.”

The Trump Organization did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
