The year was 1998. Eva Mendes had a small part in A Night at the Roxbury, a resume credit that could open doors and secure roles without a single audition for decades and decades to come. And Eva did act a ton in the following decade and a half. From the years of 2000 to 2014, Eva’s credits included Hitch and Ghost Rider and The Place Beyond The Pines with her boyfriend Ryan Gosling. But 2014 was the last time any of us saw her on a big or small screen. There’s a reason for that. She said she’s gotten picky since becoming a mom.
Eva may not be as active as she once was in Hollywood, but she’s pretty active on Instagram. InStyle says that someone recently hopped into the comments of a post, asking why she hasn’t been in a movie since 2014. Cameron Diaz also hasn’t been in anything since 2014, and Cameron admitted a few years ago that it was because she decided to retire from acting. Eva hasn’t retired. She just took some time off to raise her daughters, 5-year-old Esmeralda and 3-year-old Amada. Eva still wants to act, but says her choices are limited, due to her desire to set a good example for her kids.
“As a mother now, there are many roles I won’t do. There are many subject matters that I don’t want to be involved with, so it limits my choices and I’m fine with that. I have to set an example for my girls now. But no worry, I got some side hustles. Ha! Thanks for asking. All the best for 2020.”
Her side hustles include an ongoing clothing collection for New York & Company, and a brand ambassadorship for Avon.
Two years ago, Eva told E! News that she’s “obsessed” with her kids and doesn’t want to leave them. Eva didn’t specify what kind of example she wants to set for her daughters, or what kind of roles are instant no-nos to her. Based on the fact that a good chunk of Eva’s acting credits were characters that could be described as “very sexy,” maybe she’s pushing back against that. Although I don’t think she needs to worry so much about what her daughters would think. Eva played a perfume counter hussy in the remake of The Women. That movie was no good. But Eva was great! And I personally feel it’s something she should be proud of.
