Marvel’s Wolverine instantly became one of our most anticipated video games the second it was announced.
That debut cinematic trailer gave very little away though sent ripples through the PlayStation and Marvel fandoms. This Is the first proper Wolverine game we’ve had since the X-Men Origins movie tie-in that launched a decade ago.
Not only that, it’s being developed by no other than Insomniac Games. Why does this matter? The PlayStation owned studio is behind the best-selling superhero game of all time, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and has a clear flair for adapting comic book icons into killer video game experiences.
Marvel’s Wolverine release date
The biggest question is when we’ll actually get to play this upcoming PlayStation title. Right now there is no confirmed Marvel’s Wolverine release date. Unfortunately it could be many months until we get our next Wolverine update, probably via a big media blowout or a PlayStation State of Play broadcast in mid 2022.
A release date doesn’t seem likely until at least 2023, going by comments made by Insomniac Games.
The Sony-owned company – which also created Spyro and Ratchet & Clank – stated that Marvel Wolverine is in “very early development”. We also need to consider other projects currently in the pipeline at Insomniac.
Between its two studios located in California and North Carolina, Insomniac Games comprises a huge team of more than 275 employees, presumably juggling a handful of titles and early concepts.
The big one, of course, is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 which is also due to launch in 2023. The PlayStation exclusive is a follow up to the original game and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, seeing the two heroes come together to face a new threat.
After leaving a breadcrumb trail of clues for players to follow, we have confirmation that Venom will be the main villain of Spider-Man 2. It has also been speculated that Kraven the Hunter will feature in the sequel. There’s also a possibility that Green Goblin will appear, too.
Is there a Marvel Gaming Universe?
It will be interesting to see if there is any overlap between Marvel’s Wolverine and Spider-Man. PlayStation fans have been clamouring for a shared universe of Marvel games, in the same vein as the MCU. The chances of multiple publishers collaborating to achieve this are next to none. However, with two Marvel games already under the belt, we could see Insomniac and PlayStation carve out their own expanded world, featuring different comic book legends.
As we push into 2022, we’ll be stalking the web for any piece of Wolverine news we can sink our claws into. Check back for more updates on Wolverine gameplay, characters, and a release date.
