Drought: Opening Night Film

It’s 1993, and the South is experiencing the worst drought in history. However, Carl, who’s on the autism spectrum, is fascinated by weather and predicting a major storm. In hopes of creating a better life for their family, Carl’s sister Sam decides they’ll chase the storm in their mother’s ice cream truck. Unexpectedly, they’re joined by their best friend, Lewis, and estranged older sister, Lillian, and together they learn about family, forgiveness, and following your dreams.

Drought was filmed in Wilmington, NC, after directors Hannah Black & Megan Petersen won the Seed&Spark Hometown Heroes Crowdfunding Rally and secured acclaimed filmmakers Mark & Jay Duplass as executive producers. Following a nationwide casting call for actors on the autism spectrum, the directors were thrilled to choose Owen Scheid, a film student at UNCW, for the role of Carl.
