One of the great things about being an adult is that you get to indulge in your favorite beverage pretty much whenever you want to.
I mean, what's better than coming home after a long, tiring day at work, getting your favorite libation, putting your feet up and letting the day fade away.
Besides, I've read that drinking red wine is good for you. Right? Maybe not.
One thing we all know is that drinking in excess has very detrimental effects on our bodies.
But, did you know that there are a lot of reasons to stop consuming altogether? Below are 6 of those reasons.
1. You'll lose weight
Wondering why you can't lose those last 10 stubborn pounds? You may not realize just how many calories are in that beverage you love so much.
A regular can of beer contains 154 calories; glass of white wine 128; a martini 295; and a jack and coke has 308! See what I mean?
Cut it out of your diet and the pounds will melt away.
2. You'll get a better night's sleep
Because these beverages are depressants, it seems counter-intuitive that cutting them out of your diet will actually help you sleep better.
But, the truth is that consuming disrupts your body's normal sleep patterns and, because they act as a diuretic, you'll more than likely wake up during the night to use the bathroom.
Drinking can also cause nightmares and decrease the amount of melatonin (the hormone that regulates your body's internal clock).
3. Your brain-power will increase
Drinking can delay and disrupt the way neurotransmitters in our brain work so we feel groggy, agitated, and prone to forgetfulness.
It can also impair your ability to learn from your mistakes and learn new ways to problem-solve.
So, when you stop drinking, you start to feel level headed and alert and you'll stop forgetting the milk (again)!
4. Boost your immunity
I know it's hard to resist drinking spiced eggnog and hot toddies during the holidays, but that's prime cold and flu season.
If you're one of those people who always seems to catch a cold before anyone else does, do yourself a favor and stay away from those holiday drinks.
5. Your skin looks better
Since the beverages act as a diuretic, it draws water out of your skin, making it look tight, dry, red and puffy.
When your skin is dry, you're more likely to develop wrinkles.
GASP! And, if drinking dehydrates your skin, you can bet it will do the same for your hair. The result: dry, brittle hair that's prone to breakage and ugly split ends.
