40 Under 40: Afa Ah Loo

“I work to get what I want — and I won’t rest until I get there.”

Afa Ah Loo  LLC • Founder + Fashion Designer • Orem • Age 34

Afa Ah Loo is a total seam stealer. Born and raised in Samoa, Ah Loo started his singular fashion brand there and then moved to the U.S. four years ago. He’s shown his collections at fashion weeks in Fiji, L.A., Utah, Australia and New Zealand. His work has appeared in Vogue UK and Elle Magazine. Queen Elizabeth II invited him to show an iconic original gown during the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange. And Ah Loo was a fan favorite cast member on season 17 of Project Runway. Sew. Completely. Cool.

CHILDHOOD DREAM “A doctor.”

DREAM MOMENT “Showing my work in Buckingham Palace in front of the entire royal family and talking to people I have looked up to, such as Naomi Campbell and Anna Wintour. I love representing Samoa and doing what I love.”

ULTIMATE DREAM “Have my work available and accessible to every woman and man around the world.”

MASKED + ANSWERED

MASK MOJO Who matches their mask to their outfit? Fierce fashion designers, that’s who.

QUARANTINE IN A NUTSHELL “NEEDED.”

QUARANTINE HIGHLIGHT “Slowing down and giving myself well-deserved self love.”

QUARANTINE LOWLIGHT “All the pounds I have put on! Since being home, I cook and bake almost every day. I love it … but not when I step on the scale. Haha.”

QUARANTINE SURPRISE “I’m actually a clean freak. I knew I was before, but man has this quarantine heightened that.”

QUARANTINE TAKEAWAY “Washing our hands and staying home when we’re sick. Let’s be more aware of our surroundings.”
