PAX Unplugged 2019

Last December, Mike and I went to the third annual PAX Unplugged convention in Philadelphia. It is a fun con focused entirely on tabletop games, such as board games or Dungeons & Dragons, as opposed to video or computer games. It is not a cosplay-focused con, although this past year there were more folks wearing costumes based on various RPG series, such as The Adventure Zone or Critical Role. But the overall number of cosplayers is pretty small.

I went with very simple costumes for Friday and Saturday (and opted for street clothes on Sunday). On Friday, I wore a casual Mulan-inspired outfit. Mike and I did just a few quick photos in the upstairs lobby of our hotel, rather than lug photography equipment into the convention center.

We took this selfie in the same lobby. You can see that it had light walls and normal overhead hotel lighting. But we were able to black that out by using a gridded softbox on a speedlight.

We spent the rest of Friday gaming and wandering the expo hall.

While waiting in the line for Acquisitions Incorporated autographs, Mike met Robin Childs, who was wearing a casual K’thriss Drow’b cosplay. Robin mentioned that they were cosplaying a more involved version of the same character on Saturday, so Mike set up a shoot for then.

On Saturday I wore my casual Catwoman costume, which is another simple outfit that is easy to wear. Mike decided to bring more photography equipment along with us, since we were shooting with Robin later. One of the entrance halls to the convention center has a bunch of cool architectural features that seem very “Old Gotham” to me, so we opted to do some Catwoman photos there.

I really liked this spiral staircase with the copper panels behind it. Lots of visual interest.

There were some lighted walls that were illuminated purple, the theme color of PAX Unplugged. Purple is also perfect for Catwoman!

Saturday was the day we saw the most cosplayers, although there still were not that many. Here are the few hall shots Mike got.

Later in the day we had our shoot with Robin Childs. Their K’thriss Drow’b costume was amazing!

We did these photos using a gridded softbox to black out the background, same as in the Mulan photos from Friday. There was so little natural light in that part of the convention center, that it was pretty easy to overpower the artificial ambient light with a speedlight.

Sunday was a quiet day. Most of our friends had departed, and I got some sobering news from work, so we just took it easy. We played a few games and wandered around the expo hall and other parts of the convention center. I did not cosplay that day.
