Daily NHL betting guide: January 13

Getting a little skin in the game can make watching NHL hockey even more exciting.

During the 2021-22 season, Daily Faceoff will help you become an improved bettor thanks to this betting model and our betting tools.

Each day we will look at each game, the Sportsbook Odds (via PointsBet), and the odds of each team winning based on the model created by Philip Bulsink. Based on those two numbers, we can quickly identify which teams we need to bet on, which teams to avoid and which lines to keep an eye on throughout the day.

You can quickly determine which teams are the best bets by following this simple table:

All “Recommended Bets” are 1 unit wagers.

I will also provide some analysis on the best bets and update this post throughout the day to point out big injury news, lineup changes, and backup goalies starting.

The number to keep an eye on is the “Diff.” which is the percentage difference between the model’s projected Win% and the projected Win% based on PointsBet odds. To find out how odds turn into percentages, use our Odds Calculator.

Model’s Picks

Recommended Bets

St. Louis Blues (vs. SEA)

The Blues are -192 favorites, but the model sees them as the largest favorites (-314) on the 11-game slate. The Kraken come in on the tail end of a back-to-back and have lost 10 of their last 13 road games. Meanwhile, the Blues have won 11 of their last 12 home games, while outscoring their opponents 50-23–an average of 4.2 goals for and 1.9 goals-against per game.

1 Unit Bet: STL -192

Tyler Yaremchuk’s Picks

Game Pick

I’m going to agree with the model on this one. The reason I like this pick is because St. Louis has been dominant on home ice this season, going 14-3-2 and covering the Puck Line in 10 of those victories.

The Kraken have been bad on the road, going 4-10-2 and losing seven of those games by two-or-more goals. They also just lost 5-2 to Dallas last night.

I like the Blues to roll in this one. I’m also taking the Penguins in regulation at +105, but I’ll have more on that with The Daily Faceoff Show.

Prop Pick

Mathew Barzal Over 0.5 assists vs. NJD (-115)

I missed last night, but I am 5-3 in January with my player prop picks and four of those wins have paid +100 or better. Tonight, I’m looking at Mathew Barzal, who is on a seven-game assist streak with 11 total helpers over that span.

-115 isn’t a great payout but I’ll take it considering the Islanders are taking on a Devils team that has allowed 13 goals in four games this month. They’ll also be starting Jon Gillies tonight.
