Damien basketball earns fourth seed in CIF State Open Division

The CIF State office released the pairings for the Southern California regional boys and girls basketball playoffs. First-round games will take place Tuesday, with regional semifinals slated for Thursday and the regional finals will occur Saturday.

A total of nine area basketball teams have been selected for several divisional tournaments with several of them receiving top bids.

Damien High School (28-3), who just missed qualifying for the CIF Southern Section boys basketball Open Division Final game, was seeded fourth in the State Open Division and will host St. Joseph’s High of Santa Maria (27-2). The Knights won the CIF Central Section Open Division championship Friday with a 70-64 win over San Joaquin Memorial.

The winner will take on top-seeded Torrey Pines in Thursday’s semifinal. Torrey Pines received a first-round bye. The game will feature two of the top guards in the state in St. Joseph’s Jincho Rivera, who has signed with Chicago State University, and Damien’s Malik Thomas, a USC signee.
