FFS, Tony Abbott Is Endorsing Both Gladys Berejiklian & Alan Jones For His Old Electorate Seat

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott is the latest person to back Gladys Berejiklian for the Federal seat of Warringah, despite her ongoing corruption investigation.

Just months after sensationally resigning from her role as New South Wales Premier amid an ongoing ICAC corruption inquiry, some of the biggest names in Australian politics are calling for her to enter the federal race. Prime Minister Scott Morrison and a number of his Cabinet Ministers have already publicly expressed their support for Berejiklian, and now Abbott is jumping on the bandwagon too.

“Gladys did a fine job as premier and was by far the best of them at resisting virus panic and calls for lockdowns,” Abbott said on Monday. “We certainly need more people in Canberra with an instinct for freedom and a feel for small business and it would be good to keep Gladys in our public life.”

Warringah has historically been a safe seat for the Liberal Party, but after Tony Abbott lost the seat to independent Zali Steggall in 2019, they seem pretty desperate to claw it back.

Perhaps, this is the reason Abbott was reportedly trying to convince Alan Jones to run for Warringah, and is now also backing Berejiklian. It simply cannot be stressed just how much this man is handing out Warringah endorsements like its his job.

On Monday, Scott Morrison asserted that Berejiklian — who is very much still under investigation for corruption — is a “person of great integrity”.  “If she wants to have a crack at Warringah for the Liberal Party, I suspect that the people would welcome that in Warringah,” Morrison said.

The news comes after Morrison has repeatedly slammed ICAC, making it increasingly apparent that there’s very little hope we’ll ever get a federal anti-corruption body under a Morrison government. Morrison has repeatedly referred to ICAC as a “pile on” that hasn’t “found” Berejiklian guilty of anything, but has not acknowledged the fact that the inquiry is yet to actually hand down its findings. There is no assertion that Berejiklian is guilty, but until the findings have been handed down, we cannot confirm her innocence either.

Berejiklian is yet to comment publicly but is believed to be “considering” the idea. Nominations for the seat of Warringah have been extended until January 14, which gives Gladys Berejiklian — and Alan Jones — time to throw their hat in the ring, if they wish.
