HISS GOLDEN MESSENGER - O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL

Hiss Golden messenger

Well suddenly out of the winter blue Hiss Golden Messenger has given us a seasonal album that surges up my favourite Christmas records, only just a little short of Over The Rhine’s Blood Oranges In The Snow.

I think what I love about both of these records is that every song is not explicitly about the Christ event but that every one is implicitly spiritual. Even Hiss Golden Messenger’s opening Hung Fire has the line “It's Christmas, baby, I'm glad we made it” echoes the Merle Haggard cover on Blood Oranges… If We Make It Through December. Both songs call for realism in the happy family time of year.

MC Taylor the human behind the Hiss Golden Messenger moniker has  curated a lovely little collection of covers, carols and original songs.

Taylor has this amazing ability to just slow down the world. Everything is relaxed and reflective. He does this with the carols, O Come All Ye Faithful, Joy To The World and Silent Night, the latter like a whispered meditation and so much richer for it.

Don’t think it is only it is only the carols he reconstructs. Spiritualised’s Shine A Light and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s As Long As I Can See The Light.

The latter lights candles and so does my favourite song of all. Grace is of course a favourite word for me. A word to discover and live life by. MC Taylor give the word a prayer, lights candles for a variety of people and ends with: -

Grace

Be on us

Grace

Be on us

Not a word about a Christmas, yet every word that could be about Christmas.

Dim the lights, light the fire, raise a glass and listen to Hiss Golden Messenger. It will soothe and stimulate your soul in the gentlest of ways.
