How to Date During COVID Times

It’s been a turbulent couple of years for all sectors – including the dating department. COVID and its unprecedented turmoil has changed the way we live, work and play. While we hope it’s not forever, it’s here for now. Here are a few tips and tricks to get around a date during COVID.

Get to know them first

Since there’s no rush to go out and meet in person, you can take your time to get to know them first. If you met online, phone calls and texts can indicate if you have a similar sense of humor or have the same interests. Granted being in person is better, but during a pandemic, it’s not always as convenient. So get to know your potential partner in advance so that when you meet them, you’ll already have some baseline of who you’re meeting.

Go for coffee rather than drinks

Cocktails are always a go-to for first dates, but how about switching it up with a sober coffee? Since restrictions in Hong Kong are on-and-off between the 6pm curfews, bars might be closed anyway. Head out to your favorite coffee shop as a first date and get to know your date in the daylight.

Head somewhere outdoors

It’s become somewhat common knowledge that spending more time outdoors is better to avoid COVID. Meet your date out and about in one of the city’s scenic outdoor spots, from Tamar Park to a challenging hike.

Try not to bring up COVID

It’s difficult to completely avoid this convo topic, but you could at least try to minimize it. The subject of COVID is daunting and exhausting, so try to focus on other things. Talk about your career, aspirations, favorite things to do and anything exciting that you’re looking forward to in the future. Basically whatever keeps you away from the pandemic rabbit hole.

Bucket list together

Speaking of other topics, it could be a fun idea to craft up your own bucket lists. While we’re waiting for travel to re-open (fingers crossed, 2022!), many of us are dreaming up the next destination we want to visit. Make your lists and show eachother the places. Who knows, you may even travel to the same spot together one day.

Virtual dates

If you’re not quite ready to meet your date in person due to COVID scares, you can try a virtual date. It may sound a bit odd, but a lot of people have been doing it. If you’re too shy to put the camera on yet, a voice call is a good starting point.

Be more selective

You don’t need to rifle through dozens of dates. Perhaps now is the best time to be more selective and only put the effort in for the dates you actually want to go on. Get to know them first and pick and choose what’s worth a second date and what’s not.

Have fun!

Stay positive! COVID isn’t ideal for meeting new people, but it’s definitely not impossible. Branch out and try dating apps, coffee shop runs and virtual dates to spice up your dating life.
