Indie Clapton shop blacks out Friday sales stunt… yet still tempt the public (in a nice way)

BLACK FRIDAY: ARNCHA SICK of this ruse to get us to spend on ourselves just as we’re trying to scrape together some money for Christmas gifts? Big business, however, can’t get enough of the US import — the Friday falls on 25 November this year 2022 but John Lewis and other retailers ran an extra Black Friday a week early to cash in to the max.

A small Hackney business, Lab Tonica, has had enough. It’s blacking out its shop window to create a haven from the cynical attempt to induce shopping hysteria. The shop wants to stand up to what it terms “the commercial rhetoric” that, it says, can “crush smaller independent brands, favouring mass production over local creations”.

To encourage you to join the protest, all Friday 251122 buys at the shop, an old confectioner’s that Lab Tonica founder Kitty McEntee renovated, will come with a gift of Unplugged tea, made of herbs to help you relax.

A local treasure is what Kitty McEntee, in top picture, terms her Clapton shop’s vintage interior

McEntee believes independent businesses are vital for neighbourhoods and for a local domestic economy to thrive. She adds: “We wanted to do something different, to offer a tranquil oasis for all our customers tired of the Black Friday circus.”

McEntee describes the old-style interior of her shop as “a local treasure” and its offerings as “natural herbs and botanicals and a curated collection of independent UK brands, including hand-poured candles, homeware, accessories and unique artisan gifts”.
