One of the most popular hacks is making jackfruit taste like pulled pork, but I want to show you how to get that pork flavor the vegan way and without just dousing it with a bunch of BBQ sauce. Instead of stovetop cooking, I’ll be using the instant pot to get that really nice pulled pork with the stringy texture and smoked flavor in a pressure cooker.

- Allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes.
- Open the vent, and then the lid and stir.

- Serve the jackfruit as is, or following the variations below, or store in the fridge until ready to serve.
Recipe for Instant Pot Jackfruit Pulled Pork
The first thing that you want to do with your jackfruit is taking it out of the can and rinse it. I used young jackfruit for this recipe, but you can use jackfruit with brine or water. Just avoid in syrup or else you’re going to have a sweet sticky mess. Now that you’ve rinsed your jackfruit, throw it into your instant pot. You can make this jackfruit pulled pork using a slow cooker, you’ll just have to adjust the cooking instructions a little bit.
Next, take a potato masher and mash the jackfruit in your instant pot. In my video, I half mashed the jackfruit, only because with the pressure of the instant pot, it’ll help break it down a little bit more and then we can mash it again after it’s cooked. Now, you’ll want to add one diced onion into the instant pot, as well as a quarter-cup of tomato sauce, the juice of one orange, and two cloves of garlic. Then you’ll want to add three tablespoons of tamari, two tablespoons nutritional yeast, one tablespoon apple cider vinegar, half of a teaspoon of liquid smoke, one tablespoon vegan Worcestershire sauce, one tablespoon of ground cumin, a teaspoon of paprika and a teaspoon of thyme.
Now that you have everything in the instant pot, give it a stir! Now, you’re going to pressure cook this for 4 minutes. First, it’s going to take about 15 mins for it to come to the right pressure, but then the actual pressure cooking is for 4 minutes. Then you’ll let the pressure escape naturally for 10 mins, and then it’s ready to go! After you’ve opened up the lid, take the potato masher again and break it more apart since the pressure cooking has made it nice and soft. You’ll notice it pulls apart very similar to pulled pork.
Now that you have your jackfruit tasting like pulled pork, you can enjoy this on a taco with some slaw salad or add a bit of BBQ sauce to make your traditional BBQ jackfruit pulled pork sandwich. And voila! Tasty instant pot Jackfruit Pulled “Pork” recipes to enjoy!
