Glashütte Original SeaQ line – new models for 2020

The Glashütte Original SeaQ line has just been enlarged with the introduction of new galvanic blue dials. The new models respect the legacy of the Spezimatic Type RP TS 200 of 1969 but introduce a notable sense of luxury and style. Housed in a 39.5mm steel case, this new watch is ideal for both male and female wearers. Additional gem-set models are also available, infusing this horological composition with an overtly glamorous appearance.

Last year, Glashütte Original unveiled its SeaQ line ‘Spezialist’ collection. Some of the inaugural models were faithful to the original model of 1969, Spezimatic Type RP TS 200. Other members of the SeaQ line ‘Spezialist’ collection featured the brand’s sublime panorama date display. In addition, these latter references were even offered with blue dials from the outset.

This year, the Glashütte Original SeaQ line has been enlarged and now encompasses an array of additional models, each housed in a 39.5mm steel case. These watches feature a regular date aperture at 3 o’clock and galvanic blue dials with a sunray finish. It is this combination of case size, type of date indication and dial hue which differentiates these new models from their forebears.

While the Spezimatic Type RP TS 200 of 1969 was a utilitarian object intended for subaquatic use, these latest watches are notably luxurious. This is not to say they have sacrificed the practicality of the 1969 original nor does it mean they don’t bare any resemblance to the Type RP TS 200, however, they do look more ‘dressy’.

Glashütte Original SeaQ line has clearly recognised that many of its clients choose a diver’s watch for its appearance rather than any strong desire to explore deep oceans. The blue dials exhibit a notably sumptuous quality, while the use of ceramic bezel inlays promises years of fade-free, scratch-resistant resilience. The case size will suit both sexes, while the option of a gem-set bezel may well appeal to ladies with an appreciation for diamonds and a fondness for glamorous timepieces.

Consistent with all models from Glashütte Original, the Calibre 39-11 automatic movement is beautifully finished. The three-quarter plate is adorned with Glashütte ribbing and engraved with golden text. The oscillating weight is partially openworked and endowed with the brand’s ‘double-G’ emblem. Lastly, a swan-neck fine adjustment system provides a traditional means of adjusting the rate.

Exquisite timepieces with a history

In 2019, Glashütte Original introduced not only the SeaQ diver’s watch but the new “Spezialist” collection at the same time. The latter takes up the idea of instrument watches, drawing on a rich legacy of particularly accurate and robust timepieces developed to determine the time and location on land, water and in the air. Inspired by the first diver’s watch made in Glashütte, the Spezimatic Type RP TS 200 from 1969, the manufactory renews its diver’s watch tradition.

With these new models, Glashütte Original adds two stainless steel variations to its existing line of diver’s watches. Applied Arabic numerals and indexes with Super-LumiNova inlays ensure optimal contrasts. The hands, too, feature generous luminous inlays.

The first model is fitted with a galvanic blue dial featuring a delicate sunray finish. The counter-clockwise rotating bezel is fitted with a deep blue scratch-resistant ceramic inlay that takes up the blue hue of the dial.

This model also proves convincing thanks to the clearly perceptible minute-click and the Super-LumiNova highlight on the triangle marking the start of the dive.

This elegant timepiece was tested for conformance with DIN and ISO standards and meets the most rigorous German and international quality standards in terms of water resistance, legibility, shock resistance, resistance to salt-water corrosion and many other criteria.

The second model is particularly enchanting: the glamorous timepiece features a rotating bezel studded with 47 brilliant-cut diamonds and a sapphire, ensuring a dazzling appearance. The sapphire on the bezel assumes the function of the triangle mark, which is normally used on diver’s watches to set the start time of a dive.

Since the blue gemstone replaces the luminous marking on the bezel, this version does not conform to the DIN and ISO standards, which require that the bezel be equipped with a triangle inlaid with luminous material. It goes without saying that all other criteria – in particular the water-resistance and airtightness under over- and underpressure conditions – are thoroughly tested in-house, as are all SeaQ models, and conform to the standard for diver’s watches.

Reliable functionality and water resistance

Both timepieces feature an engraved case back, which is aligned and then secured in place with a threaded bottom ring.

The engraving shows the trident maritime symbol, the Glashütte Original double-G and 20 waves, which represent the 20-bar water resistance.

Both models are powered by the manufactory’s Calibre 39- 11. Enclosed within a 39.5 mm stainless steel case, the automatic movement features a running time of 40 hours, a second-stop function and a date window at 3 o’clock.

The new SeaQ is available with three strap versions: a black rubber strap with relief pattern, a water-resistant blue nylon mesh strap and a stainless steel bracelet with 8-step fine adjustment mechanism. Two strap versions are available for the SeaQ models with diamond-studded bezels: a stable, flat stainless steel bracelet with fine adjustment mechanism and a robust blue nylon mesh strap ensure a secure fit on the wrist.
