Neighborhood spotlight: Exploring residential and quaint Silver Bluff
THE NEIGHBORHOOD: Silver Bluff is a cozy residential sub-neighborhood in Coral Way that’s sandwiched between Little Havana and Coconut Grove. It’s the kind of community where you’ll see the neighborhood kids selling lemonade and fresh mango slices.
Beba Sardiña Mann, the president of the Silver Bluff Homeowners Association, has called the neighborhood home since 1964.
“We’re still enjoying the quaintness of it,” Mann said. “It almost feels like a small-town neighborhood – something that you would find in a small village like in the Napa region.
THE PLACE: Just a short drive outside of downtown Miami, Silver Bluff is filled with historic Mediterannean-style, Art Deco, and Florida Ranch style homes.
Dr. Paul S. George, a historian at HistoryMiami, recently dove deep into the history of Silver Bluff. In his report, he explains how a ridge of limestone was exposed and eroded by the waters of Biscayne Bay that would eventually create the shoreline that exists today.
In his analysis, he also notes some of the more well-known residents of the time, including: Frank B. Shutts, founder of the Miami Herald, Judge George Worley, and Bowman Ashe, the University of Miami’s first president.
WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT: After a day of walking or biking around and checking out the interesting houses in Silver Bluff, you can grab a bite to eat at one of the many foodie spots that line Coral Way. Check out Café Croissant if you’re craving something French, Oporto Cafe for a Portuguese meal, or The Mighty if beer and tacos are on the brain.
HOW TO CHECK IT OUT: Dade Heritage Trust will feature the historic Silver Bluff neighborhood as part of their Urban Miami Bike Tour this Sunday, Aug. 11, rolling off at 11 a.m. The knowledge-packed bike tours happen the second Sunday of every month and start at DHT’s headquarters. Bring your own bike and helmet for this adventure.
The cost is $5 for DHT members and $10 for non-members.
