Nottingham Forest linked 27-year-old makes surprise claim, was set for Reds medical

Nottingham Forest courted Jed Wallace throughout the January transfer window but Millwall stood firm over his valuation.

The player was actually injured throughout that month but his return has seen the Lions climb the Championship table.

Gary Rowett's team have won five of their last six and Tuesday's 0-0 draw at Blackburn saw them leapfrog Forest into play-off contention.

After that game, Wallace discussed the January situation with Forest, Celtic, Leeds and Besiktas all linked with his services.

It was claimed that Millwall wanted £9 million for Wallace; despite his contract expiring at the end of the current campaign.

Some reports also claimed that Wallace was set for a Forest medical (The Sun (16/01; page 60).

Wallace is enjoying his football and he's been discussing how close he came to leave The Den earlier this year.

He told BBC Radio London: I was never that close.

My overriding feeling in January was I wanted to get back playing football and I know when I'm playing at The Den I'm enjoying myself.

I think my performances have shown that.

Whether I've got 10 years or one day left on my contract I'll give my all for the club because they've done a lot for me in the last five years.

Forest must return for Wallace in the summer

Even if he was close to leaving in January, the winger is hardly going to let on at this stage in Millwall's season.

He must know that his chances of staying in South London are pretty slim, especially given that he's been offered a contract and rejected it.

Wallace will have plenty of clubs interested in him during the summer and Forest will need to act quickly to get him over the line.

  • PROGRESS: Forest make big off-field call

Steve Cooper was desperate to sign him during January; with some reports claiming that he was the head coach's primary target.

Paying over the odds for a player in the final months of his contract didn't make sense though.

The 27-year-old has scored six goals and nine assists this season and the Reds have to move heaven and earth to sign him in the summer.
