Super6 Sprint: round two team-of-the-week
A POLISHED all-round, try-scoring performance sees Logan Trotter inherit the No 15 jersey from his Stirling County team-mate Marcus Holden, who in turn is named at stand-off after a tidy all round performance as the Bridgehaugh men got the better of champions Ayrshire Bulls.
The powerful Lomond MacPherson invariably made ground when he got ball in hand for Watsonians at The Greenyards so is selected on the right-wing (although his defence is a work-on), ahead of Ross McKnight who showed blistering pace to open the scoring for County. Edinburgh pro Jack Blain impressed for Heriot’s so edges out the jinky Ryan Daley of Watsonians, powerful Iain Sim of the Knights and Gregor Tait of Heriot’s.
The hard-running Lewis Berg of Watsonians is outside centre, partnering Edinburgh pro Chris Dean, who was a stand-out for Heriot’s at inside centre, with 18-year-old Ben Salmon worth a mention after a sound display in attack and defence, topped off bay a lovely break that set up Trotter’s try for Stirling County. Southern Knights recruit Billy Wara‘s yellow-carding counted against him.
Another 18-year-old in Finlay Burgess partners County team-mate Holden at half-back.
Veteran Southern Knights loose-head Grant Shiells and tyro Watsonians tight-head Gregor Scougall had to fair old tussle at scrum time. They pack down either side of 18-year-old hooker Corey Tait of Boroughmuir Bears, who gets the nod ahead of stiff competition from Cal Davies of Watsonians, Grant Stewart of Ayrshire Bulls and Angus Fraser of Stirling County.
Ruairidh Leishman‘s all-round captain’s performance for Heriot’s means he was an easy pick in the middle-row, partnering Daniel Suddon of Southern Knights, who grafted hard to keep the Watsonians pack in check for most of the game.
The return of open-side Connor Gordon added some extra steel as Stirling County toughed it out to beat the Bulls, so he forms a back-row triumvirate with Jack Mann of Heriot’s at blindside (making the team for the second week in a row) and Harry Borthwick of Southern Knights at No 8.
