The Fangirls’ Movie Review: Always Be My Maybe
It is always exciting when Asian actors get to take the leads in Western movies. And since that is pretty rare we like to spread the love far and wide. So join us as we review Netflix’s latest romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe!
Childhood sweethearts have a falling out and don’t speak for 15 years, only reconnecting as adults when Sasha runs into Marcus in San Francisco. Although the old sparks are still there, the couple live in different worlds.
Kmuse: I am a sucker for a romantic comedy, especially a well done romantic comedy which this definitely was. Sasha and Marcus’s friendship and eventual romance felt so real that I was instantly sucked into their stories.
Drama Geek: The actual story arc was a tried and true rom-com, but what really sets this movie apart is the characters that fill the movie, and the wonderful comedy infused in most of the scenes. Not to say the plot wasn’t fun and interesting. I honestly laughed through the entire film.
Kmuse: I wouldn’t say that I was blown away by any new type of directing style. But I will say that I was impressed wth the director’s ability to show the passage of time. I totally bought that Ali Wong was a teenager in those early scenes. Also, Randal Park’s various expressions were a gem.
Drama Geek: I didn’t really notice anything special about it, but I they did manage to create a very comfortable atmosphere that highlighted San Francisco and gave the characters a wonderful backdrop.
Kmuse: Sasha is such a delight. Which kind of surprised me since I think I was expecting something closer to Ali Wong‘s standup routine which is a bit less sweet and more in your face. It was a nice surprise. Randal Park also did an excellent job at being the guy next door.
Drama Geek: I loved Sasha and Marcus and thought the side characters were wonderful as well. Marcus’s dad and Sasha’s best friend felt very real and thought out. Daniel Dae Kim played a hot jerk, and I loved it. LOL
Kmuse: I don’t think we can discuss this movie without commenting on the awesome Keanu Reeves cameo. Now this is how a cameo should be done. A total surprise, but accompanied by all the joy that actor/actress brings to the world. Not to mention the joy the scene gave me on twitter when everyone played around with the song. Hours of enjoyment.
Drama Geek: Can we get a Keanu cameo in all the movies? I laughed so hard during every minute he was onscreen. Ali and Keanu had great chemistry, and the way that Randal Park played off of him was fantastic. And I agree with Kmuse, the Keanu song has brought me hours of delight.
Kmuse: This was the absolute perfect summer romantic comedy film. It is going onto my list of highly enjoyable rom-coms and I will be revisiting Always Be My Maybe many times in the future. I give it a 8/10.
Drama Geek: One of my favorite rom-coms in years, and bonus because my husband loved it too. I will keep this on my list of feel good go to movies. I give it a 9/10.
Til our next movie adventure,
