‘Like he couldn’t care less’: Jason Cundy fires criticism at player after last night

Jason Cundy has fired huge criticism towards Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after his performance last night.

The Gunners conceded a stoppage time goal to draw 1-1 with Slavia Prague in the first leg of a Europa League quarter-final tie.

Unfortunately, the Czech side now have an away goal to take into the second leg next week in Prague.

Aubameyang was a surprise omission from the starting XI on Thursday, with manager Mikel Arteta deciding to drop him due to his underwhelming form.

The 31-year-old attacker did have an extremely busy 15-minute cameo though at the end of the game.

Cundy’s overall negative assessment of Aubameyang may have some truth to it, but it’s unfair based off his contribution last night alone.

Yes, he missed a decent goalscoring opportunity moments after coming on with a first-time effort in the box. But the forward did provide the assist for Nicolas Pepe’s goal with a pass forward to catch out Slavia.

“I look at them now and he can’t even play his captain. He can’t pick him because of the performances he’s putting in,” Cundy told talkSPORT.

“You look at their captain who is on the most amount of money… he walks around like he couldn’t care less. I’d love to know what Arsenal fans feel about this.

“He’s their captain. He comes off the bench and first thing he does is miss a chance he should gobble up. He should score that – that’s what he’s paid to do – and then they concede towards the end.”

TBR’s View:

If you look at Aubameyang as a player he doesn’t scream out captain material, but he emerged as a leader at the Emirates Stadium due to the way he set the standards on the pitch.

But he’s not been the talisman for the north London club this year with his displays.

It should be a big wake-up call that he was axed from the starting line-up against Prague, and he at least contributed to a goal when he came onto the pitch.
