Serious Thoughts About PASS

Back when Covid started I guessed that this might be yet another live-or-die challenge for PASS. PASS is heavily dependent on Summit revenue and uses it to fund all the other stuff. Looking at the most recent budget notes (see the PASS blog) there’s a forecasted shortfall of $1.5m and that’s if they hit their attendance targets for the Summit and the sign up goal for PASS Pro. Maybe they can make that up from the more or less $1m...

SQLOrlando Update

We’ve cancelled our upcoming Meetups in April and May due the loss of our venue (due to corona virus worries) though we would have probably cancelled them anyway. Our lunch meetups – typically 5 to 10 attendees – remain scheduled, but we’ll evaluate those as we get closer to the dates. For the most part we plan quarter by quarter. Our next planning meeting is May 1, that’s when we’ll decide what to do for Q3. If things are...

SQLSaturday Orlando Notes – Owning Stuff

One of the choices you make as an organizer is whether to buy anything that you want use or give away at the end of the event. Owning nothing means nothing to store or hand over to the next organizer, no guessing whether it’s worth spending money this year to save money or make things easier next year. In Orlando we’ve slowly accrued stuff. Signs. A banner. 3 coffee containers. 2 laser printers. Assorted storage bins. Misc office...

SQLSaturday Orlando Notes – Cupcakes & Ice Cream

For the past few years we’ve had a a local sponsor provide cupcakes as the “sweet treat”. We started with mid afternoon but found it worked well if we did right before the end of day raffle gathering. It’s a chance for a bit of networking and it’s a buffer to give attendees something to do before the raffle gets started. Cupcakes are good. The only downside is that they are messy to eat and so most people eat them quickly so...

SQLSaturday Orlando Notes – SpeedPASS

This year for the first time in a long time we pre-printed the SpeedPASS for all attendees and we did it on perforated paper. This was really all about logistics, it’s a pain to have to provide a printer, paper, scisssors, and someone to staff the table for what feels like the penalty line of people that forgot to print (or bring) their SpeedPASS. It is, of course, a trade off. For me moving the work way from Saturday was a win, even...

SQLSaturday Orlando Notes – Post Event Speaker Survey

One of the follow up items I have from the event was to poll speakers on what hotel they used (see my previous post). In jotting down some notes about other possible questions it occurred to me that this is such a missed opportunity for PASS. You’ve got speakers who go to a lot of events and will notice things that are different (good or bad) and just see it from a different perspective than the organizer that fills out the post...

SQLSaturday Orlando Notes – Designated Hotel

Almost every year we select an “official” hotel for the event. For those coming in who don’t know the area it’s a way to avoid figuring out what is a good hotel in a convenient place and it’s a chance for speakers to hang out with other speakers outside of the event and related parties. I think (?) many events do this. In all our years of doing this I don’t think we ever captured how many people actually used the hotel we...
